In February 2026, the China–UK Youth Cultural Exchange Winter Camp, organized by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Education, was successfully held in the United Kingdom. More than 230 students from seven secondary schools in cities including Beijing, Shenyang, and Jincheng participated in the program.

During the camp, students joined classes at local British schools, stayed with host families, visited world-renowned universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, and explored historic cultural districts. Through a wide range of activities, the participants engaged in meaningful cultural exchange. Chinese and British students learned from one another, deepened mutual understanding, and formed lasting friendships, becoming young ambassadors for cultural exchange between the two countries.

During the program, which took place just before the Chinese Spring Festival, students from China and the UK jointly presented a vibrant cultural performance blending Chinese cultural elements with youthful creativity. Distinguished guests attending related events included Mr. George Pippas, the 811th Mayor of Cambridge and Honorary Chair of the British Educational Technology Society, Ms. Cheryl Pilliner-Reeves, Vice Chair of the British Educational Technology Society, Ms. Evelyn Chua, Headteacher of Hampton Gurney School, and Mr. Matthew Syddall, Deputy Head of The Oratory School, among others.

In a video address, Mr. Yu Changxue, Director of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, noted that young people represent the future of the world and a vital force for peace and development. He expressed hope that through living and learning together, students from both countries would broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of different cultures, and plant the seeds of friendship that transcend geographical boundaries. He also called on all sectors of society to work together to create more opportunities and platforms for youth exchanges, enabling more young ambassadors to promote friendship and cooperation between China and the UK.

In his remarks, Mr. George Pippas highly praised the cross-cultural communication abilities demonstrated by the Chinese students and encouraged them to become “ambassadors of the times” connecting China and the UK. He also expressed hope that more British students would visit China to experience its ancient yet vibrant culture firsthand, participate in cross-cultural studies, and help build a global youth network linking the UK, China, and the wider world.

Since launching the China–UK Youth Cultural Exchange Program in 2025, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation has organized exchange visits for more than 740 students from over ten primary and secondary schools in cities including Beijing, Shenyang, Shenzhen, and Jincheng, achieving positive results.

Through a combination of “going global” and “bringing in” initiatives, the Center will continue to organize a series of China–UK youth exchange activities. These efforts aim to support the high-quality international opening of education, strengthen youth cultural understanding, enhance global competence, and create more opportunities for young people from both countries to connect—thereby promoting people-to-people ties and friendship between China and the United Kingdom.
