Reposted from the Center for International People-to-People Exchange, Ministry of Education

Recently, the “China–UK Youth Cultural Exchange Program”, initiated by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Education, successfully carried out one of its “Bring In” exchange initiatives. A delegation of 30 teachers and students from Clarion School in the United Kingdom arrived in Beijing, beginning a cultural exchange journey marked by both cultural immersion and meaningful dialogue. The visit aims to build a bridge of friendship and cooperation between young people from China and the UK.

Academic Exchange Builds Friendship Between Chinese and British Students

In the vibrant early days of spring, the Clarion School delegation visited the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University, a school with a long-standing educational tradition. The group toured the Qian Xuesen Memorial Hall, Sanwei Caotang, and the school’s innovation and science laboratories, gaining deeper insights into Chinese culture, history, and educational philosophy.

During the visit, British students were paired with Chinese peers as study partners. They attended classes together, participated in discussions, and took part in cultural and sports activities such as Baduanjin (a traditional Chinese fitness exercise), table tennis, and basketball. Through shared experiences and lively interactions, the students strengthened mutual understanding and formed friendships that transcend geographical boundaries.

The principals and representatives of both schools also exchanged gifts as a symbol of cooperation and goodwill. Ms. Wang Liping, Principal of the High School Affiliated to Beijing Normal University, introduced the school’s history and educational philosophy, while Ms. Michelle Stephenson, Vice Principal of Clarion School, expressed her hopes for deeper collaboration and continued youth exchanges between the two countries.

Experiencing China’s Innovation and Industry–Education Integration

To gain a closer understanding of China’s technological innovation and industry–education integration, the delegation visited Beijing Polytechnic University of Science and Technology. At the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Industry College’s virtual simulation training base, students experienced immersive courses related to robotics and intelligent technologies, operating equipment themselves and exploring the practical applications of advanced technologies.

The delegation also visited the Zhongguancun (Yizhuang) International Robotics Industrial Park, where they learned about China’s latest achievements in robotics research, intelligent manufacturing, and industrial innovation. The visit offered firsthand insight into how industry–education collaboration is driving technological advancement and industrial upgrading in China.

Discovering Chinese Culture Through Historic Landmarks

Beyond academic exchanges, the visiting teachers and students also explored Beijing’s historic landmarks and cultural heritage sites. Walking through the ancient capital and climbing the Great Wall, the delegation experienced the depth of China’s long history and the spirit embodied in its cultural traditions.

Each historical site and story helped the visiting students better appreciate the richness and uniqueness of Chinese civilization, deepening their understanding of China and bringing the cultures of the two countries closer together. Following their time in Beijing, the delegation will also travel to Nanjing to visit additional schools and continue their exchange activities.

Strengthening People-to-People Ties Through Youth Exchanges

Since launching the China–UK Youth Cultural Exchange Program in 2025, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation has organized a series of exchange activities through a combination of “going global” and “bringing in” initiatives. The program serves as a bridge for cultural understanding, supports the high-level international opening of education, and promotes the holistic development of young people.

By providing more opportunities for direct engagement between Chinese and British students, the program aims to enhance international perspectives, intercultural communication skills, and global competence, while fostering lasting friendship and mutual understanding between the people of China and the United Kingdom.
