The Ethics of the Genomic Revolution – CRISPR and Beyond

As our ability to read and write DNA increases, society faces profound ethical questions regarding the limits of genetic intervention.

Gene Editing and CRISPR-Cas9

CRISPR-Cas9 is a molecular tool that allows scientists to "cut and paste" DNA sequences with unprecedented precision. While it offers the potential to cure devastating genetic diseases like Sickle Cell Anemia, it also raises concerns about "germline editing"—changes that are passed on to future generations.

Privacy and Genetic Discrimination

The availability of direct-to-consumer genetic testing has led to concerns over data privacy. Genetic discrimination occurs if employers or insurance companies use an individual's genetic predisposition to a disease against them, a practice now regulated by laws like GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) in various jurisdictions.
