The Industrial Versatility of Hydrated Lime in Environmental Remediation

Hydrated Lime—chemically known as Calcium Hydroxide $Ca(OH)_2$—remains a cornerstone of 2026 industrial chemistry, particularly in water treatment and soil stabilization.

  • pH Modulation and Neutralization: In industrial wastewater treatment, hydrated lime is used to raise the pH of acidic effluents. This process causes heavy metals to precipitate as hydroxides, which can then be filtered out of the water stream.

  • Pathogen Eradication: In municipal sludge treatment, adding hydrated lime to reach a pH of 12 for at least two hours creates a hostile environment that eliminates pathogenic bacteria and viruses, transforming hazardous waste into "Class A" biosolids suitable for agricultural application.

  • Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD): In energy production, dry lime injection systems neutralize sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) emissions, reacting to form calcium sulfate ($CaSO_4$), thereby preventing acid rain.
